Why this story matters

Most of us assume that if we get sick, medicine will have an answer.

For nearly a century, antibiotics have made that assumption possible.

But bacteria are changing.

And some of the medicines we depend on are becoming less effective against them.

Antimicrobial resistance already contributes to millions of deaths worldwide - and researchers project its global toll will rise dramatically in the decades ahead.

My own experience brought that enormous global problem down to the scale of a single person.

Me.

A difficult-to-treat infection led me into a world I never expected to see - one where physicians, scientists, and researchers are searching for new ways to fight bacteria when existing treatments aren't enough.

And eventually, that search led me somewhere extraordinary.

To bacteriophages.

Viruses that attack bacteria.

And to an emerging field of medicine that could change the way we think about treating some of the world's most difficult infections.

From personal experience to a bigger story.

What began as a search for answers became something I never expected.

It connected me with physicians, scientists and researchers working at the edge of what medicine currently knows.

It introduced me to experimental treatment.

It showed me how slowly scientific breakthroughs can reach the patients who need them.

And it made me realize that my story is only one tiny part of something much larger.

So I started documenting it.

Not because I have all the answers.

I don't.

But because medicine is changing in real time - and most people have no idea this is happening.
